A Star Thrower?
Loren Eiseley's classic short story
The Star Thrower
Has been retold many times as an illustration of the importance of helping the individual, even when it's impossible to help everyone.
In the story, set long ago, in a time of oil lamps, ink and paper, a storyteller runs into a stranger one morning while walking along the sand on a beach after a storm.
From the distance, this stranger looks like they are dancing. As the curious storyteller gets closer he sees this person is amongst thousands of starfish that have been washed up on the beach by the storm.
The sun is rising and the tide is racing out, the starfish washed up by the storm need help to survive and thrive.
The stranger -the star thrower- is not dancing but rather taking starfish and gently, strategically and purposefully throwing them back out into the ocean where the starfish can live.
In most re-tellings of the star thrower, the storyteller asks this person why they bother to do this work when saving all the starfish is an impossible task.
"There are hundreds and thousands on this beach what difference can you make?"
The star thrower only shrugs and takes another starfish, throws it out behind the breaking waves and says
"It made a difference to that one."
This encounter is a call to action for the storyteller who learnt an important lesson that day, it is also an analogy behind the ethos of many different humanitarian services today.
In regional and remote NSW we have so much need. Hundreds and thousands of young people need support, it can be overwhelming for the individual human beings who do this work, but we remain because even if we cannot help all, we can make a difference to one.
hence... The Star Thrower
